20th Anniversary of LIFE Schools Conferences

This year's schools conference roadshow was special as it marked a 20 year run of schools conferences touring Northern Ireland. The idea for a conference for schools came originally from Downe LIFE group. Individual conferences were held for several years, first in St Malachy's High School in Castlewellan and then moving to Downpatrick Leisure Centre to accommodate larger numbers.

But it was in 1993 that Belfast and Newry groups joined in, bringing the conference to 3 local venues, the beginnings of the roadshow. The following year all the LIFE groups came on board and the conferences grew to 6 venues and have grown ever since.

Now in 2013, the roadshow is an 11 venue tour with a dedicated team of LIFE NI staff who organise and plan the roadshow, assisted by a number of committed volunteers, who help with running the conferences on the day.

Our schools conference partners—Niall McNally who presents the afternoon slot on relationships, Janice Kernoghan who writes and directs the drama, Forfey, who do sound and light and Studio stereo who look after design and video—all contribute to making this roadshow the continuing success it has become.

May Ball

LIFE NI May Ball

Last Month's May Ball was a great success raising over £12,000 for the charity! Over 185 guests enjoyed a sparkling wine and Guinness drinks reception to the music of a string quartet, followed by an wonderful 5 course dinner. Director Vivien Hunter gave a challenging appeal for support for the work of the charity. Entertainment from a local comedian and dancing to the excellent Hootenannys rounded off the evening.

Special guests Paul Givan and Alban Maginness, MLAs, pictured here with Vivien Hunter, Gordon McDade LIFE NI Chair and Mary Lewis, LIFE NI Executive Committee, enjoyed the event and pledged their support for the work of the charity.

LIFE NI welcomes the amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill tabled last week by MLAs Paul Givan, Alban Maginnis, Tom Elliott and Jim Allister, which is intended to ensure the law on abortion in Northern Ireland continues to be fully upheld. If passed, the amendment will prevent private companies such as Marie Stopes from carrying out abortions here. We believe any attempt to derail this amendment is ill conceived and call on all parties upholding life to vote in favour of the amendment. LIFE NI supporters will be encouraging their local MLAs to support this amendment.

LIFE NI has been counselling and offering practical help to women in crisis pregnancies for over thirty years. We also offer counselling after abortion. We are concerned for the welfare of the pregnant woman and her child. This amendment, if passed, will help to protect the life of the child in the womb and also importantly, ensure that pregnant women with difficult medical problems will be treated in the safest setting – one where multidisciplinary medical assistance is available rather than the limited treatment available from unregulated, unmonitored organisations which campaign for the liberalisation of abortion globally.

Women in Northern Ireland deserve the best medical treatment. Unregulated organisations such as MSI give us no confidence that women’s best interests are served.
